Pro Bono Legal Help Program: Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program (MCVLP)

What It Is:

A not-for-profit organization matching people with the need for legal services with private attorneys who volunteer to represent them at no cost.

Who Qualifies:

If you live in Madison County and are a low-income individual, you may be eligible for pro bono services. Specific qualifications:

Your household income is at or below 125% of the established federal poverty level OR

You receive financial assistance under one of the following programs:

  • TANF Program
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability (SSDI)
  • Food Stamps Program

Types of Cases They Accept:

  • Income Maintenance
  • Wills and Probate
  • Affordable Housing and Homelessness Prevention
  • Supporting Families
  • Protection of Consumer Rights
  • Income Maintenance

What It Is:

More than 3,000 Alabama lawyers provide free legal services to low-income citizens in certain civil matters through the five volunteer lawyers programs in this state. The volunteer lawyers’ programs also provide free legal assistance to community-based organizations that improve the lives of low-income Alabamians.

What It Is:

An independent, nonprofit organization that provides qualifying low-income families in Alabama with free civil legal aid. Click here for a list of locations.

Who Qualifies:

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services establishes the income amounts used to determine who is eligible. These guidelines usually change at the beginning of each year. Must be a resident of Alabama.

Types of Cases They Accept:

  • Counsel and advice
  • Mediation
  • Administrative representation
  • Representation in court
  • Appeals in appropriate cases
  • Legal self-help materials and forms

Types of Cases They Do Not Accept:

  • criminal cases
  • enforcement of child support orders
  • job discrimination cases
  • sue people or businesses for money.
