What We Know About the PFAS Contamination in Gordon County

Our investigation revealed that municipal sludge dumping from the City of Calhoun water treatment plant was contaminated with PFAS from industrial wastewater. The contaminated municipal sludge was dumped on farmland at multiple locations in Gordon County. PFAS from this contaminated waste has migrated into the soil and water on properties adjacent to or in close proximity to areas where the sludge was dumped.

Large amounts of PFAS-contaminated industrial wastewater from carpet mills in and around Calhoun was combined with the wastewater collected at Calhoun’s water treatment plant. Unfortunately, PFAS-contaminated water was not properly treated and has been found in the City of Calhoun’s water supply.

Because of the dumping of sludge and contamination of the water supply, Gordon County citizens who consume well water or city tap water may be impacted by PFAS.

Testing Your Water for PFAS Contamination

At this time, we recommend that all persons in Gordon County test their water—well or tap water—to determine existing PFAS levels. Many companies offer testing services. Cyclopure is a relatively inexpensive test that can provide this information. Once we have initial information, we may arrange for additional testing. Please note that there are other companies that provide testing, and we are not affiliated with or endorsing any specific company.

Removing PFAS From Your Drinking Water

EPA researchers are studying the effectiveness of household water filters and have identified three technologies to remove certain PFAS from at-home drinking water:

  1. Activated carbon absorption: Using carbon to attract and trap the PFAS for removal.
  2. Reverse osmosis: Purifying water by using pressure to force water through an extremely thin barrier that separates chemicals from the water.
  3. Ion exchange: Tiny beads that act like powerful magnets to attract and hold the contaminated materials from passing through the water system.

There are many companies that provide this technology.

You can also use water pitchers with filters. The nonprofit Environmental Working Group (EWG) published a study last year identifying four water pitcher filters that can remove certain PFAS by nearly 100%. That list includes Travel Berkey, Zero Water, Clearly Filters, and Epic Water Filter. The water filters range from $20 to $330, and EWG has a guide on the pros and cons of each in-home water filtration system.
